DIGITAL DRAWINGS

BIOMORPHIC LANDSCAPES

These images were created through digital drawing and montage. Samples of the body and nature co-exist with synthetic and digital elements. Just as digital technology is influenced by patterns and structures in nature, biological life reflects aspects of digital technology, such as the the ability to recombine, duplicate and change form. Adapting to a digital and genetically modified future, I imagine that biological organisms will develop abilities to re-configure in endless new variations. Reworking legends and landscapes, these fantastical drawings present a world of recombinant structures whereeverything is transformed from its original nature.

JACOB'S LADDER

Jacob’s Ladder is influenced by the Old Testament story of Jacob’s vision of a ladder to the heavens. In this version, the ladder is a precarious molecular structure. The landscape is created from body samples (breasts, skin, belly buttons) and drawn elements, suggesting a landscape and a constellation.

YGGDRASIL

In ancient Nordic mythology, Yggdrasil is the world tree, a tree of life whose branches extend over all the known worlds, its roots extending into three of them. This piece hybridizes the female body and the tree as a symbol of life.

OASIS

Oasis was influenced by a visit to 'biosphere2', created in the Arizona desert in the late 1980's. Intended to be a sealed, self-contained microcosm of planet earth (and a potential model for earth-style colonies) it failed to sustain human and animal life in its fragile environment. In Oasis, living and synthetic elements are combined in a precarious architecture.
