Somnium Redux

Somnium is an ongoing project involving many participants in an interconnected, interactive structure centered around the interpretation of dream narratives, with sound design and music composition by M.Azevedo. Participants are asked to recount to the artist one or more of what they consider to be their most significant dreams. The dreams are recorded and then from the repository the artist selects dream narratives to interpret as video, animation or sonic sequences. Often the narratives involve the participants themselves, or other participants re-enacting the dream narratives.

Somnium Redux is an installation at Block Gallery, Sacramento, in October 2008, that is a manifestation of the ongoing Somnium project. The installation contained three interactive works: a projected TV, a projected fireplace and a projected reel-to-reel player in old apartment-style rooms. The projected elements created a trompe l'oeil effect. The first room contained a sofa, table and a projected TV set and old fashioned remote-control (with hidden laptop and electronics). Viewers used the remote control to select channels on the projected TV. The channels showed dreams by participants in the project. The second piece contained binaural sound recordings of dreamscapes, apparently emanating from the projected reel to reel player (sound design by M. Azevedo) and the third piece was an interactive fireplace and when a viewer walked past, sharks appeared in the flames.
