The Gold Kitchen installation (2004) was commissioned by the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA for the Art Ark touring exhibit, Paintbrushes to Pixels. The Gold Kitchen is a collaboration with composer, Stephen Blumberg. The installation was created for elementary school children. Title references Dr Faustus by Thomas Mann: "...the hermetic laboratory...the gold kitchen: composition". Alchemy is often used as a metaphor for the artistic process, and in this interface, sound and visual fragments are combined by the user in the creation of an improvised visual/sonic composition, that is the shared creation of artist, composer and user. The combined events can result in a quiet and simple composition, can be quite calculated, or can be multi-textured and even chaotic, depending on the users' interaction.
