Bio Electric Dot is a reflection on how the latest technological advances affect human relationships. Following the idea that the medium is the message, the installation revolves around the subject of digital communications not only as a means to connect people but also as a tool disrupt human relationships. Every time a new communications medium surfaces, people learn new ways to relate to each other in a more immediate and seemingly unobtrusive manner. However, digital communications bring a whole new set of characteristics that also affect how we behave with others; not only can communications among people be easily archived (i.e., email, discussion list participations, online purchases, websites visited, etc.) but also they can be copied and shared with ease. Is this registry of life always positive for human relationships? Are we really communicating better and not just more? Are geographical barriers broken when it comes to human relationships? Is a normal relationship the same as an ethereal online human relationship? Do we have an anonymous persona that we cannot materialize into our real self without major discrepancies? Is the transition between online relationships to normal relationships problematic? Is our sense of what it means to relate to each other both in inter-personal relationships, and as a society at large, being radically transformed? Americans, as early adopters of new technologies are the ones who will experience first the outcomes of the digital communications explosion. Bio Electric Dot is an installation that both utilizes the digital medium, and addresses how we are changing as a society because of new communication technologies
